Greer Howland Smith
Greer Howland Smith is an interdisciplinary BioArt artist exploring the intersections of science, identity and living systems. Her energetic, colorful work spans multiple media and engages critical perspectives on the body, science and power. In her work, Greer examines biopolitics and the influence of social media on perception and identity, using materials ranging from bioluminescent microalgae to oil paint, watercolors and mycelium. She has regularly collaborated with scientists in the field of biology and neuroscience.
Greer was born in Chicago and has lived in North America, Europe and Asia. During a decade in Hong Kong, she ran an art studio hosting community events, including performance art for HK Art Basel Satellite projects, co-founded a design company, and taught fine art. She returned to New York City in 2021. Smith holds an MFA in Fine Arts and History of Art from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, and studied textiles at Saga Art College in Kyoto, Japan. She has completed BioArt residencies at the School of Visual Arts in New York (2022, 2025), exhibited across the USA, Europe and Asia, and her work is held in private collections worldwide. She now creates alongside her two children—painting, 3D printing, programming Roombas, and growing dinoflagellates—in a creative and joyful practice!
